About
Welcome and thank you for visiting!
I’m Dr. Debbie Cheshire, a licensed clinical psychologist with 15 years of experience as a therapist and a newly certified 200-RYT yoga instructor. In addition to my private clinical practice, I have worked as a psychologist in both a group practice setting and in a major teaching hospital in an integrated health care role, and have served as a supervisor for therapists in training. These opportunities have provided me with a wider perspective than a private practice alone.
In addition to my experience as a clinical psychologist, I have a background in music therapy and education and have worked extensively with clients ranging from preschool through adulthood with developmental disabilities including autism spectrum disorder and deafness; I can communicate using conversational sign language.
I view psychotherapy as a collaborative journey between clinician and patient, and I rely on a multitude of perspectives and interventions that I construct and tailor to meet the needs of the individual with whom I have the privilege to work, thereby assisting that person in making the changes or increasing the understanding that he or she desires. I recognize that each of us approaches therapy with our own history, world view, and life experiences and as a result, what you may experience in therapy will undoubtedly be unique to you. Regardless of individuality, rest assured that you will be treated with respect and compassion.
I conceptualize situations and issues from several different perspectives including cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, and spirituality. I utilize a variety of interventions in my work such as mindfulness exercises, prayer, journaling, music, and LifeForce Yoga® (an evidence-based mood regulation protocol that supports those with anxiety, depression, and PTSD, using accessible yoga tools).
In my work with children, play therapy, storytelling, role playing, and art are all interventions that are incorporated into sessions dependent upon the child and the presenting issue.
I am a Christian and am comfortable intertwining issues of faith within the space of psychotherapy when desired by my patient. I strive to do that in an open, accepting, and nonjudgmental manner.
